The property-seizure gambit in Old Blood is modeled on the real-life seizure of pension assets by the Argentine government of Cristina Kirchner. In the fall of 2008, the government of Argentina was rapidly running out of money and had no means to borrow more. In October, Cristina Kirchner announced that she would be seizing private property "to protect the people".
